Maine's Bold Coast is a quiet, far less touristy area of the state’s rugged coastline. What it may lack in typical amenities or a business that stays open after 8 PM, it more than makes up for with charm and photogenicity (that’s a word, I promise). The area is filled with stunning views. Rocky shores plunging into the Atlantic, working fishing villages, dense forests, lighthouses, and abundant wildlife, everything you could want is here. Who needs a gas station after dark?
I had the pleasure of staying in the town of Lubec, whose claim to fame is that at 44.8586° N, 66.9836° W, it is the easternmost town in the United States. While being able to brag that you saw the sunrise first might be a draw to some, the town’s proximity to Campobello Island in Canada and other nearby sights make it an ideal home base. The dynamic weather and incredible light in the area make for some exciting photographic opportunities. The conditions can change quickly though, so if you blink, you could miss it.
